Opening Modification Consultation

Use this page when a project involves a new or enlarged opening in an existing building and the structural implications are not yet fully defined.

What we need to understand early

The opening location, the existing structural system, whether the element is load-bearing, and whether the project is changing more than the visible finish opening. Even a small cut can affect support conditions, temporary stability, and filing expectations.

Common consultation topics

New or enlarged openings

Doors, windows, passages, service penetrations, and slab cuts in existing buildings.

Support framing questions

Lintels, headers, trimmers, localized steel, and the receiving structure around the opening.

Occupied-building sequencing

Field constraints and temporary-condition questions that need to be understood before demolition starts.
